How most restoration apps work

Popular AI restoration services, including Remini, MyHeritage, Picsart, and the AI features in Photomyne, send your photo to their servers, process it there, and send the result back. Their policies describe how long uploads are kept; Remini’s web tool, for example, says uploads are deleted from its servers after 15 days (1 day if you aren’t signed in). That may be fine for you. It’s still a copy of your family photo on someone else’s computer.

How Local Photo Restore works

• Color adjustments are computed on the device too.

• Results save as a new image in your Photos library; the original stays put.

To be complete: the app uses RevenueCat for purchase reporting and onboarding analytics tied to a random app identifier. Photos and edits are never included. The privacy policy lists exactly what is sent.

The trade-offs of staying on device

Server-based tools can run much larger models. That’s how they offer face reconstruction, colorization, and scratch repair, none of which this app does. On-device processing is also limited by memory: Local Photo Restore caps enlarged output near 17 megapixels, and big photos take a little while on older devices.

If you need those cloud features, the comparison page covers which tools offer them and what they cost. If privacy and a one-time price matter more, and your photos are faded, yellowed, or soft rather than torn, on-device restoration is a good fit.
